Nintendo's new DSi model—dubbed the DSi LL in Japan, DSi XL elsewhere—is huge. How huge? Nintendo of Japan's new DSi LL promo video helps to illustrate just how huge, offering an attractive Japanese family to show scale.
There's not much to this recently released Japanese language clip, but it does show the Nintendo DSi LL in the proposed four-player compatibility mode, allowing for one player and three spectators, pleasantly appealing to those young, old, with preference for large or small stylus, whatever. If you prefer your portable platforms large and your plastic brown, this might be ad that convinces you to import a Japanese Nintendo DSi LL.
With the biggie sized platform due to hit Japan next week, we're sure to get impressions soon. I'm looking at you, Ashcraft! Nintendo unveiled the much awaited Nintendo DSi LL. With a large 4.2 inch screen which is what ‘LL’ stands for the new DS is 50% heavier than its predecessor, comes with two styluses one shorter and one longer and has a 1 to 3 hour extended battery life depending on the brightness. The new version is a result of customer requests for a bigger screen, Nintendo listened to them all and here is the DSi LL whose screen is 93% bigger than the DS Lite.
Just like any other game system, we knew that someone in Japan or China would eventually crack open Nintendo's latest. Yep, the one that made us ask "What? Why!?" when we heard about it. It's the DSi LL, the bigger DSi with bigger screens.
Japanese site PC Watch cracked one open, prodded it, and gave their thoughts. There was some divide there on the new screens. Younger staff members were bitching about the pixels being more apparent while older ones liked that they could see it better? Old persons' DSi? Maybe. That was PC Watch's recommendation, at least.
Inside they say it's business as usual, with the design being very similar to the DSi. There's a bigger, higher capacity battery to power those big screens now, of course. They did say that the Wi-Fi chip is a better make than in previous systems, though they did not give specifics. Otherwise it's just a bigger DSi.
I don't know if I need one of these. Being easier on the eyes isn't a strong enough selling point for me. What about you?
Bucking the slow march to smaller and smaller electronic goods, Nintendo has actually come up with a newer, bigger version of its DSi handheld. It’s called the DSi LL (XL in Europe) and along with the new 4.2-inch screen (the old one is 3.25-inches) it gets an extra, bigger pen and, best of all, some new grown-up colors. Boring old white is joined by dark brown (so successful for the Zune) and wine red (a kind of murky burgundy that only a 1970s TV detective could love).
The bigger DSi will launch in Japan on November 21st and come with three built-in games for the equivalent of $220. Europe will follow early next year and then the United States, at an as yet unspecified date. Hopefully Nintendo will have bought some non-horrible-colored plastic by then.
